FX 101 : A little about Fiber Optics and LED Curtains?

A frequently requested item for special events are fiber optic curtains (or star drops). These cloth drops have thousands of tiny points of light dotting the surface of the velour. These tiny fibers can be almost any color or combination of colors in the spectrum and can be set to twinkle at any speed. The effect often provides depth and excitment onstage. All fiber optic drapes are not the same, so when inquiring about them with other companies be sure to ask about the fiber density. In this area, the denser the better. If the curtain is too sparsely populated with fibers that effect is completely lost, if its overly dense with fibers for your effect, a portion of the fiber heads can always be easily blacked out. All of Staged Right's fiber drops have the maximum density of fibers feasible, we have fiber curtains ranging from 10' wide to hundreds of feet and varying heights. Call Staged Right today to have this popular effect at your next event.

One of the most exciting new event technologies are LED Curtains. The curtains made up of thousands of Light Emitting Diodes that can each be indivually controlled. The drop can be as large as you can imagine as other drops can be connected to it. Once installed, the LEDs are computer controlled to any selection of patterns, color, or motion. Live video can be played back on the curtain (with a resolution of 1 dot per 3"), imagine a video wall 15x30' or larger. LED Curtain live video is really only feasible on large scale productions because the resolution requires the viewer to be about 40' away from the curtain, but when it is done correctly - the effect is incredible.

Staged Right has used the LED Curtain technology with great success on several rock tours and large-scale corporate events. Each time the crowd roared with excitment the instant that the previously black backdrop was transformed into a dynamic element of the show.

FX 101: Are Pyrotechnics Safe?

Staged Right's trademark pyrotechnic show lights up the MCI Arena            The answer to this question is slightly more complicated than a simple “yes” or “no.”  When used appropriately, and by a trained professional, pyrotechnics can be as safe as they are entertaining.  However, pyrotechnics can be extremely volatile, and if not handled and treated properly, can be a danger to anybody in the near vicinity.

Here are some key points to keep in mind if you are considering adding pyrotechnics to your event:

-         Make sure there is ample room to store, set up, and detonate the display.  The firing area should be as far away from areas of public access as possible.

-         Keep water and/or other fire extinguishers nearby in case of emergency.

-         Determine whether pyrotechnics are legal in your state/county/district, and any restrictions on the usage thereof.

-         Have the fire marshal inspect the facility beforehand.

The solution is clear – if you want to include a pyrotechnic display as part of your production or event, hire a professional.  There are so many laws and restrictions placed on the sale, possession, transportation, and use of pyrotechnic equipment that it can be nearly impossible to determine if you can even have a display.

If you call a Staged Right pyrotechnician, they will take care of all the necessary permitting, insurance, and procedural red tape for you.  Moreover, they have received some of the best training in the proper and safe use of pyrotechnic chemicals and equipment.  Pyrotechnics are not something that can be left in the hands of an untrained operator without chancing a major disaster.  Call a professional at (410) 737-1385 to handle any pyrotechnic display.
