Lighting 101: Uplighting

Uplighting is a technique in used in lighting design to enhance the atmosphere of any given space.  Simply put, uplighting involves placing lighting instruments on the ground and focusing them upward.  This method of lighting is one of the easiest ways to dress up an event space.  Uplighting serves many purposes in special events.  It can add color to a neutral surface, such as a wall or column.  Uplighting can also be used to make the room appear taller by accenting any existing vertical lines, and creating new ones.  Another function of uplighting is to highlight any inherent architectural features of the room – columns, alcoves, etc.

Lighting 101: Pinspotting

            A great way to achieve a subtle accent on small areas is through the use of pinspots.  Pinspotting is another technique employed in lighting design to highlight a very specific area, such as a centerpiece, floral arrangement, display, or piece of art.  These small lighting instruments are often able to be disguised to that they are not seen, but their effects are impossible to ignore.  Pinspotting is a delicate method of focusing your guests’ attention to smaller key areas without overpowering their visual senses.

Lighting 101: Large Area Illumination

It is difficult to illuminate a large area without draining a small city’s worth of power or blinding everybody in attendance.  In fact, it is almost impossible.  Evening events held outdoors are often burdened by having to use halogen lighting towers, which both drain power and create an unbearable glare at almost any angle.  How, then, is it possible to light up a large area without blinding your guests and racking up a power bill to rival Clark W.
