Producing Events On and Around Capitol Hill...

           Producing an event is, by itself, a tricky process.  There are so many elements to consider, so many details to coordinate.  Should you be fortunate enough to have your event in a venue on Capitol Hill, however, you have even more to manage.  Capitol Hill presents its own unique set of challenges to hosting an event.  Booking the venue is a complicated process – rooms must be booked through a congressman’s office, which is responsible for getting all delivery and personnel information to the US Capitol Police inspection facility ahead of time.  Therefore, if you are planning an event, you need to know truck and staff information for each vendor you choose to use.  Then, their equipment must be inspected before being delivered.  Trucks can’t remain at the loading dock, so parking needs to be found.  None of these additional challenges is insurmountable – however, to the uninitiated, they can create a headache of nightmare proportions.

            One of the most confusing parts about hosting an event on Capitol Hill is getting everybody involved in it through the US Capitol Police offsite inspection process.  No cargo can go through the front doors of any Capitol building – it must go in through a loading dock, and must be carefully examined before the vehicle carrying it is allowed anywhere near one.  It is not uncommon for vehicles (trucks, vans, etc.) to spend upwards of two or more hours waiting in line at the inspection site.  This is time that your presenters could be preparing, or your assistants helping you set up the event.  It is a cumbersome process to go through, particularly if your event demands that more than one vehicle go through it.
